MacCorkindales Orphanage History
MacCorkindale Orphanage for HIV positive and abandoned children is in Manzini, Swaziland. The orphanage is over 35 years old and was started by two sisters of Scottish origin who devoted their entire lives to this orphanage. Both sisters are now deceased.
The farm was inherited by Mrs Sheila Ruth Pourie (born MacCorkindale) in 1985.
In 1996 she donated it to a trust call the MacCorkindale Trust for the benefit
of the orphans in Swaziland. The Trust was registered under the Notarial Deed
of Trust No. 3 1997 dated January 1997.
The Rotary Club of Manzini has been intimately involved with the orphanage for many years.. Some of the projects copleted by the Rotary Club include installation of an electricity supply
In 2003 Stillwater
Rotary Club showed interest in assisting the MacCorkindales, through the
purchase of much needed farming equipment, including a tractor. The idea
was to supply the orphanage with equipment required to make the orphanage
self sufficient, both in terms of them growing and harvesting their own
produce to eat, but also in that they could sell much of the surplus fruit
and vegetables and then use that money to purchase other necessities.
The two Rotary Clubs were successful in obtaining a matching grant and
purchasing the nominated equipment for MacCorkindales. US$18,940 in total
was raised for the purchases. Since this time the fields have been ploughed
for the first times in over 7 years, with maize and beans being initially
planted and harvested along with fruit trees being planted for use later
within a food processing plant. This year, along with several large fields
of mealie meal there are also several chilli fields being harvested to fill
orders from Eswatini Kitchens for their export preserves business
